Artist Bio:

Thor Downing is a BVI-based architect, designer, and artist whose work is inspired by Caribbean landscapes, maritime history, and the stories embedded in place. With more than 30 years of experience in design and visual practice, he works across oil and watercolour, creating pieces that combine strong composition with atmosphere, memory, and narrative. His recent work focuses on the old Tortola sloops and the coastal life of the British Virgin Islands, celebrating a maritime heritage that continues to shape the character of the islands.

"This body of work is rooted in my fascination with the old Tortola sloops — their beauty, their purpose, and the vital role they once played in the daily life of the British Virgin Islands. These boats were never just objects; they were part of a living system of trade, movement, labour, and community. They carried goods, connected people, and helped define the rhythm of island life.

What draws me most is not only their form, but the stories around them: the loading and unloading, the fishermen, the docks, the markets, the coastline, and the sense of a maritime culture that was both practical and deeply human. In these paintings, I wanted to revisit that world and give it presence again.

Many of the larger oil paintings are seen from above, a viewpoint that allows me to explore the sloops not just as vessels, but as part of a broader choreography of sea, shore, and human activity. From this perspective, composition becomes almost cartographic, while still remaining emotional and painterly. Alongside the oils, the watercolours and smaller works offer more immediate and intimate responses to the same themes — light, movement, history, and memory".
